About us
We are residents of the Royal Borough Greenwich, both east and west of the Park. Originally we were shocked and dismayed by poor governance, and lack of transparency and engagement shown by the council when it imposed the West Greenwich Traffic Management Scheme in August 2020. Unexamined and unsupported by the community, it caused distress and traffic chaos.
We are not aligned and do not represent a political party. We are critical of the London Mayor's policy of attempting force London residents to walk and ride bikes by blocking car use without qualification or exception apart from Blue Badge holders and black cab clients.
Greenwichgonetoofar came together as a group to press for transparency and fairness, and the removal of the scheme. The 'Hills and Vales' has always been quiet and amenable for active travellers. Through our work and the campaigning of our sister group OneGreenwich, and the active petitioning, communication, complaints and statutory objections of many individuals, the 2020 scheme was removed in February 2022. The area returned to peaceful normality.
However, Greenwich included in its removal decision, a plan to create an East Greenwich LTN, which has been 18 months secretly in the making. In fact, the plan includes options to re-erect barriers in West Greenwich.
We are working hard to oppose the measures, which lack evidence, threaten to worsen congestion and pollution on and around the 'boundary' roads as well as introduce increased circulation and dangerous turning movements over a huge area of north Greenwich.
GGTF is not part of a ‘car lobby’, or against traffic management designed genuinely to reduce congestion and pollution. We campaign for social justice - for example, promoting the Lindsell Street modal filter introduced in November 2020, (not part of the original scheme). This filter continues to protect social housing tenants on Dabin Crescent, Cade Tyler House and Maidenstone Hill from excessive traffic.
The scheme creates divisions where none should have existed. Like many other attempts at traffic reduction, it fails to address any of the underlying problems resulting from increased vehicle use generally and the entry of traffic to north Greenwich from a wide area.
There is no objective evidence that LTNs reduce emissions or help the fight against climate change. Instead they increase congestion, pollution and danger on over-stressed boundary roads.
There should be a new conversation about traffic. We need holistic solutions that enable the people who depend on transport, provide workable options for those entitled to move around this area, and discourage gratuitous incursion of traffic from outside a wider area. Everyone must be heard, in the interests of good government and fair treatment.
